Gathered Dining Table
Jack wanted to create a three-dimensional form by transforming one two-dimensional shape into another; in this case a triangle into a circle. Additionally, he wanted to create a flowing tapered pedestal, made using a rigid material such as steel. To achieve this effect, the differing perimeter lengths of the two shapes needed to be overcome.
The solution: to gather the steel pipes, with a similar technique as is used in dressmaking. Although the size and shape at the top and bottom are completely different, the perimeters are identical in length.
