BNKZA

BNKZA draws inspiration from the local native flora Banksia menziesii commonly known as the Firewood Banksia under guidance from Philippa Nikulinskys published observations and illustrations of the flowers. The work builds on scientific modes of representation and the rich tradition of botanical illustration through the exploration of contemporary technologies and mediums.

Physical samples of the B. menziesii are transformed and reimagined through an explorative process of 3D scanning, 3D model manipulation and 3D printing, to generate new forms, which are both scientifically legible and stylistically energised, simultaneously. These physical forms are then used as the mold for the traditional foundry sand casting techniques to make the object permanent in raw Aluminium.

BNKZA remains a faithful reproduction of its floral source while evoking humanitys indomitable desire to conceptualise nature in this post-digital age.

BNKZAs four totems depict the archetypal phases of the Banksias lifecycle and represent a cyclical process of renewal that is recognisable across the natural world, as well as the built world of human society. The cycle promises growth, maturity and rebirth as an immutable eventuality.

Care, Trust, Togetherness, Excellence.

The juvenile B. menziesii flower represents Care the plant must be properly nurtured if it is to continue to grow and reach its full potential.

The mature flower represents Togetherness where the species is at its most stable and all resources have coalesced around a common goal.

The totem in bloom symbolises Excellence this is when B. menziesii is at its most radiant and

spectacular, having overcome whatever challenges lay before.

Finally the seed pod totem is symbolic of Trust the Banksia has trusted in the destructive furore of the fire, not to raze it to the ground but to provide the necessary heat to open its pods and spread its seed, so the cycle of renewal may continue eternal.
